It was a display of patriotism mixed with tradition as cadets of
Officers Training Academy were honoured for displaying their skills in
various aspects of training at a ceremony here on Thursday.
More than 20 cadets were honoured by commandant of the academy Major
General U M Rajavelu (Sena Medal) for excellence in various fields as
the Officers Training Academy is abuzz with drumbeats and thumping of
drill boots in the run up to the next Passing Out Parade scheduled on
Saturday.
Over three hundred and fifty two officer trainees are waiting in their
wings to join the armed forces.
The academy, which is a confluence of India’s culture, is a breeding
ground for officers who are trained in various aspects to serve the
country, said Major R K Chowdhury, an instructor who teaches
communication skills to the cadets.
“The military academy instills confidence, character and competence
needed to transcend the fear of life through a dynamic process. The
OTA Chennai is universally revered as a military institution which
infuses key leadership elements in young men and women in the age
range of 21 to 25 coming from diverse regional and academic
backgrounds,” he said.
The commandant’s sports trophy, which is awarded to best lady cadets
company, was bagged by Philora company while Kumaon Regiment Trophy,
which is given to best marching contingent, was bagged by Naushera
company.
Two Afghan cadets --- Ramin Rahimi and Abdul Raqib Kabiry -- who are
getting trained in OTA were also honoured.
The awards ceremony also comes in the wake of an alumnus of the
academy Lt Navdeep Singh who fell down to the bullets of terrorists
during an anti-infiltration operation along LOC in Gurez Sector of
North Kashmir on August 20. Singh graduated as a soldier in March.
“A young spark called Navdeep has been lost, but there are 353 who
have already transcended the fear of life and signed up for a career
in uniform and whatever it represents – whatever,” said an
instructor.
