Chennai:
Asia’s biggest vegetable, fruit and flower market in Koyambedu will soon be under surveillance following a recommendation by Tamilnadu Urban Infrastructure Financial Services Limited (TNUIFSL).

Market Management Committee (MMC) sources told Express that TNUIFSL has proposed to set up CCTV cameras around 30 locations in the market and work is being going on to implement the proposals.

Interestingly, MMC is seeking the expertise of police before installing the CCTV cameras. “We wanted to get the opinion of the police department before installing the cameras,” MMC sources said.

Sources said that Tamil Nadu Urban Infrastructure Financial Services (TNUIFSL) has completed the study on improvement of market infrastructure. The study has suggested measures to augment revenue besides improve of market infrastructure.

Meanwhile, the work on laying of concrete roads, under the Rs 33 crore infrastructure development fund, is expected to be completed by July. “The laying of concrete roads is progressing in A, C and E road besides Gate 3-18, Gate 4-5 and Gate 7-14. More than 90 per cent of the work is completed and we expect the work to be completed by July,” MMC sources said.

Interestingly, then Chief Administrative Officer of Market Management Committee (MMC) P Senthil Kumar has told Express that the laying of concrete roads was expected to be completed by April. When queried on the reasons for delay, MMC sources said that it was due to the prevalence of heavy traffic in the area following metro rail work.

Sources also said that work is going on in full swing to construct the storm water drain. “We want the work on the 5-7km long strom water drain to be completed before monsoon,” the sources said.

Sources said that the long awaited food grain market will be constructed at Koyambedu once the development works are completed. “We have got the necessary approval,” MMC sources said.

The food grain market is to accommodate 500 shops with adequate parking and amenities at a cost of Rs 60 crore.
