Tamil Nadu seeks additional rice, kerosene from Centre

Chennai:
Tamil Nadu Food Minister R Kamaraj on Wednesday sought additional rice from the Union government stating that there is a gap of 18,000 metric tonnes between state public distribution system and Centre’s allocation

Speaking at a national seminar on ‘Food Safety – Role of Standards’ attended by Union Minister of State for Food and Consumer Protection KV Thomas, Kamaraj said the state is getting 2.96 lakh metric tonnes under various schemes under the public distribution system while the state’s requirement under PDS is 3.14 lakh metric tonnes.

There is a gap of 18,000 metric tonnes which is filled through interim relief from the Centre, the minister said. He also sought increase in kerosene allocation.

The minister said that Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa had written to the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh seeking increase in allocation of kerosene which has been downsized for the last few months.
