Conflict over privacy in Net can’t be resolved till terrorism is wiped out says former CBI director

Chennai:
There is always a conflict between security and privacy in cyberspace and this will not be resolved soon till terrorism is wiped out, according to former director of Central Bureau of Investigation R K Raghavan.

Raghavan, who was conferred with Lifetime Achievement Award by Cyber Security and Privacy Foundation here on Saturday, said that intelligence agencies will continue to monitor social networking sites and the messages but there should be a balance between national security and privacy.

He said government has to pry into information on what we are doing in the cyberspace as it is difficult to identify who is good and who is bad.

The former CBI director also highlighted the tussle between Indian security agencies and Blackberry maker Research in Motion over sharing of information and said that the issue was resolved after Research in Motion agreed to provide encryption keys for its secure e-mail and messaging service to Indian security agencies.

He also stressed the need for parents to take particular care to ensure that children get access to only good websites.

Tamil film actress Sukanya highlighted the issues faced by netizens while browsing and said that social media sites should be used for constructive activities.

She also stressed the need for parents to monitor children’s online history regularly and also highlighted the need to keep the computers on the hall instead of their bedrooms.

Regional director of Reserve Bank of India N S Viswanathan, who presented the Lifetime Achievement award to Raghavan, highlighted various measures by RBI to ensure cyber security.
