Allotment row over tsunami project sparks protest

Chennai:

The allotment row over tsunami reconstruction project sparked protests by a section of allottees as Slum Clearance Board started an enquiry into allegations claiming irregularities in the allotment of 628 tenements in Nochinagar.

Slum Clearance Board officials said that they are enquiring into beneficiary selection for the allotments under the tsunami project done in 2010. Officials said during the enquiry they have found irregularities in 245 allotments and has initially cancelled 58 allotments and served notices to others.

“This has sparked anger among certain allottees who questioned the decision,” the official said when queried over a mob storming the slum clearance board office on Thursday morning.

He said the allotments would only be handed after Slum Clearance Board ascertains that the beneficiaries are genuine.

South Indian Fishermen's Welfare Association president K Barathi alleged irregularities in nearly 300 allotments stating that in some instance people from the same family have been allotted houses. Interestingly, there have also been allegations over dalit fishermen are being ignored in the allotments. However, the allegations have been denied by the officials.

TNSCB proposed to construct 7320 houses with World Bank assistance for the Tsunami affected families living from Nochikuppam to Srinivasapuram. The finalization of the beneficiaries met with lot of resistance from the people of all these habitations. At the time of implementation the people of Srinivasapuram, Foreshore Estate and Dommingkuppam resisted the scheme and hence these parts were delinked from World Bank assistance. Later the proposal was restricted to the construction of 1452 tenements only at Nochikuppam (816) and Nochinagar (636). Currently, the construction of 628 new tenements at Nochinagar has completed and the selected beneficiaries were to be allotted houses.
