Chennai:
The trial run for the 100 MLD second desalination plant coming
up along the East Coast Road is being carried out and it is likely the plant
will be commissioned this month.
More than 98 per cent of work has been completed as Minister for Rural development and
Municipal administration K P Munnusamy and senior officials recently
inspected the work in the plant.
The plant constructed at a cost of Rs 871.24 cr is set to quench the thirst
of more than 15 lakh people in South Chennai. Interestingly, the plant is very
crucial now as the city did not get adequate rainfall this season.
Interestingly, the minister has instructed officials to flush the
underground sump and the main pipeline to facilitate drinking water. It is
expected that Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa is likely to inaugurate the
desalination plant.
The project is be set up with financial assistance from
the Union government. About 265 MLD of raw water from sea will be drawn by
gravity by laying 1600 mm pipes for a length of 1042 metre and after undergoing
reverse osmosis, 100 MLD desalinated water would be produced.
Meanwhile, the pumping station at Nemelli,
Akarai, Tiruvanmiyur and Velachery with a combined capacity of 1,375 HP has also been
completed along with the laying of 64.37 km of pipeline.
V A Tech Wabag Limited in consortium
with IDE Technologies in Israel were awarded the contract for building the
plant. The contract for laying drinking water pipeline and tanks was being
awarded to Larsen and Toubro. The plant is set up on an extent of 40.05 acre of
land belonging to Alavandar Trust on East Coast Road at about 35 km from
Chennai city in Nemmeli and Krishnan Karanai Villages in Chengalpattu taluk in
Kancheepuram district. The land has been given on a lease to Metro water for a
period of 30 years. The rent is fixed at 1.12 lakh per month with a provision
of 15 per cent increase once in three years.
