People in Tihar won’t be office-bearers if Sports bill was in place: Maken

Sriperumbudur:
Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Ajay Maken on Saturday said that if a Sports Bill was in place earlier then there would not have been a commonwealth games scam and most of the people in Tihar Jail would not have been office bearers of the Olympic Association.

Speaking to reporters after delivering the 4th Foundation Day Lecture of Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Youth Development here, he highlighted the urgency of the Sports Bill to bring in transparency of sport federations.

He also said that Board of Control for Cricket in India should be brought under the ambit of Right to Information Act.
“Any sports body getting direct or indirect help from the government should come under RTI Act. I have said earlier also that the biggest public function they perform is selecting the team to represent India. And any sports federation which is selecting the team should be transparent,” he said.
“The land for the stadia is government land. They also have various exemptions from tax including income tax, entertainment tax and security as such there are so many things they are getting it from India,” he said while stressing on the need to bring BCCI under the RTI framework.

He said the Sports Bill is to bring about about transparency in sports federation and lend more voice to the players to bring in ethics in sports bodies.
“We don’t intend to control any sports federation, nor do we want to run it. We also don't want a government nominee in any sports federation. What we are keen here is to bring in transparency, and efficiency in sport federations,” he added
