Chennai:More skeletons tumbled out of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University’s closet after it was found that one-year post graduate diploma in computer applications was made available in 12 days by the then varsity vice-chancellor R T Sabapathy.
According to evidence available with Express, more than 625 students from a varsity centre in Seoni in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, got provisional admission on January 5, 2011 and verifiable records say that the examination was conducted on January 17, 2011, 12 days after the admission.
Interestingly, this particular centre has entered into a memorandum of understanding with Manonmaniam Sundarnar University only during November 2010, university sources said.
The results were also announced and the students were about to get the certificate when director in-charge of distance education R Ramesh put a hold to it. When Express contacted Ramesh, he said university has taken action and the certificates have been withheld.
He alleged such scams bring disrepute to the university and it is the responsibility of the government to probe this issue so that innocent students are not cheated.
“Without a constant support from higher authorities in the then state government, such daring acts could not have been done by Sabapathy, a close aide of then higher education minister Ponmudi,” alleged university sources.
When Express contacted the centre in Seoni in Indore in Madhya Pradesh, the authorities said it is only a post graduate diploma course and we got the applications much earlier and submitted it only in January. Interestingly, when the MoU was signed on November, how could they collect the application forms earlier, wondered Ramesh.
University sources said if a CBI enquiry is ordered much more could be brought to light including bogus certificates, overnight degrees and many other malpractices during the era of Sabapathy
