Chennai:
The
Rs 2,500 to Rs 3,000 crore tax evasion by Nokia India is a unique case in the
country and if the Finnish company’s Indian facility pays back the taxes, it
would be the highest tax collected in the country, according to Income Tax
sources.
Income
tax sources told Express that the tax evasion by Nokia India is unique and was
quite different from the one in which telecom major Vodafone was involved or
the financial irregularity by Satyam computers.
In
Vodafone case, the information was gained through the papers while on Nokia
India we had specific intelligence, said the official. He also said that in the
Satyam case it was more of a case of financial fraud where the company paid Rs
300 crore on non-existent taxes.
Sources
also said that the tax evasion amount of Rs 2,500 crore to Rs 3,000 crore would
be the highest in the country.
It
is more likely that the evaded taxes could be collected by the end of March,
sources added.
