Chennai:
A Chennai based scientist is the lone innovator among the eight finalists selected from across the world for a global competition in United Kingdom to chalk out fresh proposals about systems that can provide transportable energy storage.

Geomarine Biotechnologies, headed by its scientist and managing Director Dr T Charles John Bhaskar told Express on Monday that he is the lone Indian to be selected for ‘Global Energy Storage Challenge” in which the organizers have asked for fresh ideas about systems that can provide transportable energy storage.

Finalists will present their ideas before sponsors, investors, peers and a panel of independent judges at the event Pitchlive London  which is a two days “Innovation Market Place,” taking place on October 24 and 25 at Business Design Centre in London, UK

The winner will receive a prize fund of US$250,000 sponsored by the US Office of Naval Research (ONR) and Office of Naval Research Global (ONRG). The event is organised by OmniCompete, a company aiming to become the world leader in providing high-quality innovation competitions.

Bhaskar said his proposal was about using biomolecules obtained from nature in tapping energy. “Biomolecules are naturally occurring molecules which are involved in the energy transfer in biological system. These molecules are peresent in various sources from plant kingdom to animal kingdom and bacteria,” the scientists added.

He said the proper combination of tapping them and storing and using them is part of innovation,” he added.

Bahaskar said innovation had been his cup of tea and he had come up a hard way only through innovations.

His first innovation was in the development of indigenous pro-biotics to be used in aquaculture and the technology was transferred to a Chennai based company Poseidon Biotech.

He also has won a grand prize in the Idea Jam conducted by Ideaconnection, another international organization which conducts open source innovation challenges on “Crop Yield” which made him get $10,000
