Chennai:
Now Chennaites will have a date with history during the Independence Day when the first flag of Independence will flutter again in the museum of Fort St George.
“We will be hoisting the same flag made of silk which was hoisted in 1947 to mark the independence, said K Moortheeswari, Archaeological Survey of India, museum branch southern region.
Plans are also to have a freedom fighters gallery at the museum as mark of respect to those who took part in the struggle.
The museum will also be displaying uniforms and medals issued to Indians by the British during the Raj era, Moortheeswari said.
She also urged people to provide with any ancestral property collected during the freedom struggle. She said ASI is looking for letters, photographs as well as any records related to freedom struggle. Those who are willing to donate can contact Moortheeswari at 25671127.
She also said archaeological survey of India is planning to have additional three museums in Tamil Nadu. Speaking to Express on the sidelines of celebration of International Museum Day at Fort Museum on Friday, she said currently the southern region has eight ASI museums which includes four in Andhra Pradesh, one in Kerala, two in Karnataka and one in Tamil Nadu.
“We are planning to expand it to display the artifacts there and have identified two places. They include sculpture shed at Vellore which has more than 1,000 antiquities besides sculpture shed near Main Guard Gate near St Joseph’s college in Trichy,” she said without revealing where the fourth museum will come up.
Meanwhile, a pictographic account of museums in the world under the title ‘The World Museums – A Glance’ was inaugurated by Education Secretary T S Sridhar on the occasion of The International Museum Day.
Moortheeswari said that this expo brings all world archaeology under one roof to make people aware about the rich art and culture of various civilizations. The collections include various museums and the kind of rare artifacts in their possession. The expo will remain open to public till May 31.
“Currently, we have displayed 400 museums and soon all 900 museums will be on display,” she added.
Moortheeswari said ASI is planning to host 24 events in its eight museums in southern region to celebrate the 150th anniversary of its inception. She said plans are there to display a antiquity each month to increase the footfalls.
