EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE @ CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Minister for Information Technology and Digital Services Palanivel Thaiga Rajan on Wednesday launched Geo-AI Blue Carbon Programme of MS Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF), which utilizes geospatial technology and artificial intelligence to enhance blue carbon ecosystems.
This is a collaboration between MSSRF and Microsoft to deploy this cutting-edge technology to map mangroves along the coast of Tamil Nadu. The project aims to transform the measurement of carbon sequestration in mangroves, seagrasses and salt marshes along the Tamil nadu coast by leveraging advanced GeoAI technologies.
The project would focus on drone based imaging of coastal areas of the state, Through AI tool the ground biomass of mangrove trees will be measured providing insights about the carbon storage capacity. This will ensure providing data for policy decision and better conservation and management.
Mangroves are most productive ecosystems in the world and have the potential to support the livelihoods of millions of people. They significantly contribute to climate change mitigation though carbon storage and adaptation by reducing the vulnerability of coastal areas to inclement weather, protecting them from erosion and sea level rise.
During the International Conference on Hunger-Free World: Prof. M.S. Swaminathan's Vision for an Evergreen Revolution. Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo, Deputy Chief Minister - Agriculture and Farmers' Empowerment, Government of Odisha, unveiled the foundation's new logo, symbolizing a renewed commitment to its mission.
Several empowering initiatives were launched, including the Fisher Women Connect App by KV Shaji, Chairman, NABARD, which empowers
fisherwomen with digital tools and resources in collaboration with Reliance Foundation and USAID.
