CUMTA meeting on Feb 9

Chennai:
Chennai is planning bus friendly corridors along Rajiv Gandhi Salai following a feasibility study done by Institute for Transportation and Development Policy.

Sources told Express since Chennai lagging behind in aggressively promoting the bus rapid transit system (BRTS), efforts are on to develop a network of bus friendly corridors.

As the Chennai Unified Metropolitan Authority is set to conduct its first meeting on Thursday, there may be a possibility that officials will discuss BRTS.

Sources said CUMTA could initiate action for implementation of BRTS by considering on merits the feasibility report prepared by Institute for Transportation & Development Policy (ITDP) for the BRTS proposed along Rajiv Gandhi Salai  (OMR).
ITDP sources said they have already submitted detailed feasibility study on Bus Rapid Transit system. “We have yet to hear from them,” a source said.
Sources said CUMTA may also study the  need to rationalise the routes of the bus system as it becomes all the more necessary to remove or minimise the redundancy in the operation of bus services and could request Madras Transport Corporation to explore the same with assistance if any from the Chennai City Connect.

  1. BRTS is highly necessary and long overdue in the OMR strech. It would be nice if it is quickly implemented as there is no rail / Metro rail / MRTS / any other bulk passenger transport facility available.
