Chennai:
Effective recycling of automobiles can generate two million
tonnes of steel, 150,000 tonnes of aluminum and 75,000 tonnes of rubber and
plastics by 2020, according to Dr R Chidambaram, principal Scientific Adviser
to Government of India.
Delivering the inaugural address at the Confederation of
Indian Industry conference on “Automotive R&D Trends 2015”, here on Monday,
he urged the automobile industry to show the same drive towards the disposal
chain as it has done towards the supply chain, the events which happen after a
car or motor cycle reaches end of useful life.
He said producing recycled aluminium requires only 7 per
cent of the electrical energy required to produce aluminium from the ore.
He also said the Ministry of Heavy Industry and the
automobile industry have set up a demonstration centre for automobile recycling
at Oragadum in Chennai and Industry has donated large numbers of cars and two
wheelers to kick start the center.
Stating that Chennai has the right environment to become a
hub for automotive research and development activity, he said plans are on to
set up Combustion Research Institute in Indian Institute Technology Madras.
This joint initiative by IIT Madras and Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore,
will be backed by department of science
and technology.
He also said that the Collaborative Automotive Research and
Development (CAR) and Faunhofer Group of Germany is working on a pilot project
on “Joining and Compatibility of Aluminium, Steel and Plastics (Multijoin).
