Chennai:
Tamil Nadu education minister P Palaniappan on Thursday
assured Institute of Mathematical Sciences of providing 1.16 acre of land for
the construction of multi-storeyed hostel building.
Delivering
the address to mark the golden jubilee celebrations here, the minister said
that he would bring it to the notice of Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa for
further action.
Palaniappan
said the institute is willing to pay for the land for hostel, which is required
to accommodate its 165 students. Interestingly, a decision was taken on 2003 to
allot the transfer the land to IMS for a cost of Rs 3 crore. However, no
decision was taken then.
Director
of the Institute of Mathematical Sciences Prof R Balasubramanian and Registrar
of the institute S Vishnu Prasad said that they have requested the state
government to review the decision.
Prasad
said the IMS is ready to pay for the land at the current market rate. The land
is currently in a poor shape and there is an urgent need to maintain it, said
Prasad. Currently, the hostel has only 35 rooms and can’t accommodate the
strength of 165 students.
The
institute also denied a media report that they are on the verge of getting the
land. “It is still in the initial stage and we have put forth our request to
the government,” said Prasad.
Meanwhile,
the minister also laid the foundation stone for the regional library expansion
project for National Board for Higher Math (NBHM) in the Institute of Mathematical
Science. NBHM functions under department of Atomic Energy. He said the library
is key to all academic institutions across Tamil Nadu as well as neighbouring
states. “We will be building floor floors in front of the existing library
besides adding an additional floor to the existing library,” said Prasad.
He
said initially the project was estimated to be Rs 4 crore but now there has
been a cost overrun and its is estimated to be over Rs 7 crore.
