135 MLD water supply to South Chennai restored

Chennai:
It was for more than two days Chennai was short of 135 MLD treated water from Chembarambakkam Lake when a three tonne shutter in the treatment plant collapsed, according to Metro water sources.

Metro water sources said that the shutter provided in the Intake tower to control the water transferring into treatment plant fell down on December 30 after the connecting shaft gave away.

As a result the treatment plan could not receive water from the intake tower. This posed a huge challenge for metro water officials and engineers. While Metro water immediately sought the help of water tankers to supply water in south Chennai, top officials were working on several measures on how to tackle the situation.

“For the next two days, efforts were on to restore the three tonne shutter. Rectification of the shutter work was carried out by Metro Water and Public Works Department officials,” said Metro water sources.

The biggest problem was the narrow working space besides 20 feet water level. This delayed the restoration work. Later skilled workers were also engaged to lift the shutter but that also proved futile.

It was then, metro water sought the help of experienced sea divers on the midnight of January 1, 2013. The divers using safety equipments lifted the shutter and water was received at Chemabarambakkam Water treatment plan, Metro Water sources said.

Now the normal distribution of water supply has been restored, Metro water sources said.
