Chennai:
Chennai Metro Rail is facing challenges while tunneling in the stretch between Washermenpet to Manadi as the owners of the building have not divulged the borewells that need to be shut down for the safety of the residents.
Chennai
Metro Rail General Manager (construction) V Somasundaram said
tunelling operation between Washermenpet-Manadi stretch was affected
after a borewell was not filled.
“A small
spare parts shop did not intimate us about the borewell. When the gigantic
tunnel boring machines was burrowing beneath a few days ago, the land caved in
thus affecting the stacking area,” said Somasundaram.
Interestingly,
Chennai Metro Rail came forward and agreed to pay compensation to the
shopkeeper based on evaluation done by a third party. Surprisingly, after the
incident it was found that two more borewells required to be closed.
“These sort
of things affect the work,” said Somasundaram. He said that Chennai Metro Rail
has asked the Metro Water to carry out survey of each and every house in the
area again and identify borewell that has not been closed.
Interestingly,
it was on December 2011, Chennai Metro Rail issued notices to the property
owners who stay along the metro routes to seal the borewells and open wells for
the safety of the residents. Till now 140 borewells have been sealed. But after
the incident Metro Water does not want to take chances and has once again
started the survey.
Somasundaram
said that on Wednesday, metro rail has sealed four to five borewells and have resumed
the work on Wednesday, which he describes it as challenging.
“This is
the toughest terrain for us as this area contains very old buildings. We are
continuously monitoring the settlement. We have already captured photographs of
these ancient buildings with date and are regularly comparing with the existing
building,” he said.
