First made-in-Brazil Metro train reaches city's shores

Chennai:
The first four-rake Chennai Metro Rail train reached Chennai’s shores on Friday and is expected to be transported to the Rs 198 crore state-of-the-art depot on Monday night.
The sealed rakes arrived at Chennai Port on Friday morning from the Brazilian port of Santos.
They were later transported from the vessel to Namakkal Transport Carriers (NTC) modular hydraulic axles under the watchful eyes of officials from Alstom and Chennai Metro Rail.
Speaking to Express, NTC general manager Suresh said that the rakes, each costing around `12 crore, would be carefully moved to the yard in Koyambedu, which is under construction after the payment of port charges that is likely on happen on Monday.
This comes in the wake of 800 metres of test track being laid in the yard. The first trial run of the train is expected in next three months.
“NTC has a three-year contract with Chennai Metro Rail to transport metro rail rakes from the port to the yard,” said Suresh. He said that nine trains would be imported from the Brazilian port of Santos, while the remaining, which are produced in Sri City, would also be delivered by NTC.
Interestingly, the next instalment will have two trains which is likely to be shipped by July.
“All the nine trains are expected to be shipped into Chennai from Brazil by the end of this year,” Suresh  added further.
