Workshop to boost English language skills of Chennai corporation teachers



CHENNAI: The US Consulate General, Chennai in association with the Corporation of Chennai has started a four-day “Communicative English Language Teaching Methods” workshop for 60 Chennai Corporation School teachers at the US Consulate General, Chennai.

The four-day course which started from Monday will last till Thursday. Senior English Language Fellow Michelle Stabler-Havener, who works at the Regional Institute of English in Bangalore, will conduct the workshops for teachers who handle classes from grade three to grade nine.

“I am delighted that the Chennai Corporation has taken the initiative to empower its teachers with new skills to teach the next generation of young students from Tamil Nadu.  There are many new and innovative communication technologies that are vastly different from the old paradigm of teaching and learning, and this has made a tremendous impact in the classroom,” US Consulate General, Chennai Acting Consul General Nicholas Manring said.    

“The new methods of instruction aim to move a generation of teachers and students into the 21stcentury.  These methods will help teachers to move away from rote teaching to interactive methods geared toward improving learning outcomes at schools,” Manring added. 

The workshop will focus on vocabulary, speaking, planning lessons and objectives.  The 30 participants for the workshop on June 17 and June 18 will include teachers who handle grades three to five.  The 30 participants for the workshop on June 19 and June 20 will include teachers who handle grades six to nine.

Michelle Stabler-Havener, Senior English Language Fellow serving at the Regional Institute of English, has taught ESL (English as a Second Language) in the Los Angeles area and EFL (English as a Foreign Language) in China
