Chennai:
Chennai’s first metro rail that was imported from Brazil reached its new home in Koyambedu yard on Thursday morning amidst heavy security and traffic bandobust.

Namakkal Transport Carriers (NTC) general manager Suresh Ramaswamy said that the four Chennai Metro Rail rakes that reached Chennai shores on Friday were transported to the yard by the Namakkal Transport Carriers (NTC) modular hydraulic axles under the watchful eyes of city police as well as officials of metro rail on Wednesday night.

“We travelled at a speed of 10 to 15 km and the 15 km stretch from Chennai Port to the yard in Koyambedu took around 90 to 120 minutes,” said Ramaswamy.

Ramaswamy said that the four NTC modular axles had escorts and the roads were sealed and traffic diverted during the period as the Brazilian beauty embarked on the journey to its new home.

The unwrapping and coupling of the metro rail is likely to take place either on Friday or Saturday, said Ramaswamy, whose firm has a three-year contract with Chennai Metro Rail to transport the metro rail to Rs 198 crore state-of-the art depot.

He said that it is a big day for Chennai as the city gets its first metro rail. The next instalment of two trains is likely to be shipped from Brazil by July and all the nine trains imported from Brazil are expected to reach Chennai by the end of this year.

Meanwhile, metro rail spokesman told Express that the 800 metre test track is on the verge of completion.
