The state’s population grew by 15.6 per cent in the last one decade with 97.4 lakh persons being added to the population that stood at 7.2 crore on March 2011.
Addressing a press conference to release the Primary Census Abstract 2011 – Tamil Nadu, joint director of census operations and controlling officer M R V Krishna Rao said that the census indicated a higher growth rate of female population (16.1 per cent) than the males (15.1 pc).
Of the total increase in population, males accounted for 47.4 lakh while the females accounted for 50 lakh, he said.
Kancheepuram district recorded a highest decadal growth of 39 per cent while Nilgiris recorded a decline in the –3.5 per cent. Eleven districts recorded a population growth of 15 per cent.
Interestingly, the rural population of the state grew by 23 lakh and stood at 3.72 crore while the urban population grew by 74 lakh and stood at 3.49 crore. Villupuram has the largest rural population of 29 lakh, which is 7.9 per cent of state’s rural population, while Chennai has the highest urban population of 46 lakh (13.3 per cent of state’s urban population).
Interestingly, in percentage terms, the rural population constitutes 51.6 per cent and urban population 48.4 per cent of the total population. There has been also an increase of 4.4 per cent in the proportion of urban population in the last decade. Ariyalur district (88.9pc) has the largest proportion of rural population.
Similarly, the sex ration in the state which was 987 in 2001 has increased by nine points to 996 in 2011. In rural areas, the sex ration has increased from 992 to 993. The corresponding increase in urban areas has been 18 points from 982 to 1000. The Nilgiris recorded the highest sex ration in respect of total population (1042) and rural population (1054). In case of urban population, nagapattinam and Thanjavur both (1040) recorded highest sex ratio.
