Chennai:
After the cash entitlement of more
than Rs one lakh for Param Vir Chakra (PVC), India's highest military
decoration awarded for the highest degree of valour or self-sacrifice in the
presence of the enemy, the state government has raised it to Rs 15 lakh.
Speaking during the Flag Day
celebration at the Sainik Institute here on Friday, Sellur K Raju, Minister for
Cooperation, Statistics and Ex-Servicemen Welfare vowed the keenness of the
state government in working for the welfare of the ex-servicemen as he
announced that the state has raised the cash rewards for highest act of bravery
for the nation.
Interestingly, the Param Vir
Chakra awardee was entitled to only Rs one lakh earlier before the state
government stepped in to raise it to Rs 15 lakh.
Similarly, the government has also
raised the cash award for Ashok Chakra, an Indian military decoration awarded
for valor, courageous action or self-sacrifice away from the battlefield, to Rs
12 lakh.
The minister while highlighting
the various welfare schemes initiated by the state government for
ex-servicemen, said he feels closer to the retired defence personnel as his
father-in-law was an ex-serviceman.
The minister also highlighted that
the state government has raised the cash assistance of Second World War
soldiers and the widows of defence personnel. The assistance for the Second
World War soldiers has been raised to Rs 2,000 from the earlier Rs 1,000 while
the widows are entitled to a assistance of Rs 1,500. They were earlier getting
an amount of Rs 800.
The minister also gave away cash
assistance worth Rs 6.03 lakh to 28 ex-servicemen and their families during the
function. These include soldiers injured during the Second world War and their
families, maintenance charges for ex-servicemen with mentally retarded children
and assistance fund for education for the family of ex-servicemen.
Raju highlighted the contributions
of the ex-servicemen who spend their youth safeguarding the nation in difficult
terrains and assured them not to worry when they return back as the state
government is there to take care of them
