It was a tribute to a guru by shishya as state Health
Minister Dr V S Vijay honoured his professor Dr S Soundarapandian with honorary
fellow award of Indian Orthopaedic Association on Wednesday.
The guru of orthopaedics Dr Soundarapandian, who has nurtured
more than 3,000 post graduates including Dr Vijay in the state in his career
spanning four decades, was honoured by Indian Orthopaedic Association in
recognition of his orthopaedic skills and mastery in the craft of orthopaedic
surgery for being a teacher for a generation of orthopaedic surgeons and
uplifting the standards of orthopaedic surgery in the country.
The humble professor who pioneered hip fractures and
joint replacement surgery in Tamil Nadu expressed his happiness and said that
it is good that people recognize the contribution done to the specialty over a
period of time.
He said that there has been enormous explosion in
knowledge because of modern advancement in technology. He said people with
various disabilities like arthritis and muscular skeletal pain get enormous
relief on scientific understanding and management.
He said the pattern of treatment has changed with
technology based arthoscopy and minimal invasive operations have reduced the
period of treatment and their functional restoration to very near normal.
IOA also gave away the Dr B Mukhopadhyaya Life Time
Achievement Award to Dr S M Tuli and special awards to Dr K H Sancheti, Dr
Shailendra Bhattacharya and Dr Shekhar Y Bhojraj besides honorary fellow award
to Dr P S Maini.
The state health minister later in his address highlighted
the the effective functioning of 24x7 trauma care facilities with the motto of ‘zero
delay’ across all tertiary and secondary government institutions and hospitals.
He said that this has saved many limbs and lives of accident victims. The minister
also highlighted various schemes of the government including supplying of free
orthopaedic implants to patients in all government hospitals of the state.
