11 cos in Ambattur Industrial Estate benefit from ILO backed productivity enhancement scheme

Nearly 11 companies have benefitted from a productivity enhancement programme, which was funded by Norway and implemented by International Labour Organisation to enhance the productivity of Ambattur Industrial Estate.

The programme termed as Sustaining Competitive and Responsible Enterprises (SCORE) is supported by the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) and the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD).

Thoralf Stenvold, counsellor and head of political affairs, Royal Norwegian Embassy in India and a local representative of Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD) told reporters that the main aim of the programme is to enhance the productivity of small and medium entreprises (SMEs) in compliance with environmental and labour standards to remain competitive in the market.
He said Norway is planning increase its engagement with ILO in India. Stenvold said that currently Norway is pumping in $15 million into ILO and plans to double the aid to $30 million.
He also highlighted that the liberalised economy has failed to generate jobs as it was expected.


K Sai Kumar, chairman of Ambattur Industrial Estate Manufacturing Association (AIEMA) Technology Centre told reporters that the centre with its excellent infrastructure and the team of well experienced and efficient ILO trained trainers is poised to extend the benefits of the SCORE programme to 100 more SMEs in the next three years.

Currently, the programme is being implemented in 11 member units at ATC with plans to implement it in another 13 more units in this calendar year.

Thomas K Verghese, chief executive officer of Fabrimech Engineers, a SME in Ambattur Industrial Estate, said the skills programme has resulted in the company getting new customers in Spain, France and United States. “We are in the process of expanding our manufacturing facility. Thanks to the space saving of 8.2 per cent of the total area,” he said.
