C Shivakumar and B Anbuselvan @ Chennai:
The satellite bus terminus in Madhavaram, which will accommodate commuters going to neighbouring Andhra and other northern regions, has drawn flak from Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) who claim the terminus is unsafe as it does not have separate partition for moffusil bus and MTC city bus operations.
Built in eight acres of land at a cost of Rs 95 crore, the project, which had faced feasibility issues and was stalled initially due to heavy truck movement, now is facing criticism from MTC officials who claim the terminus is unsafe
Although the bus terminus is expected to provide much needed relief to commuters going to neighbouring Andhra once it is inaugurated, MTC feels the design has excluded the end-user by failing to provide the passenger requirements who come from the city to alight the buses.
Sources said during inspection it was found that only one carriageway is provided in open space to MTC buses from the entry side along the parallel direction with moffusil buses coming into the intercity bus terminus towards parking area. As such there is no separate partition between moffusil bus entry and MTC bus operation, the sources added.
“We have sought sufficient parking space or bus bays for MTC buses to ensure smooth and reliable bus operation for the benefit of travelling public as we are proposing to operate more number of buses via GNT Road and Chennai Moffusil Bus Termionus,” the sources added.
MTC sources apprehended that if the required parking bays is not allocated for MTC buses, it may kill the purpose of building the terminus.
When Express contacted a senior CMDA official, he ruled out the bus terminus has any safety issues. He said that they are looking into the demand to have partition and increase the parking space for MTC buses.
“While preparing a Detailed Project Report, MTC was consulted and required parking bays were discussed. Now they are demanding more space as such we will check the feasibility of allocating more space,” he said.
However, this is not the sole issue. One of the issues that is affecting the completion of work is the basement which has been leaking every now and then. Since the land is low lying area, they have been facing this problem and hope to resolve it soon. However, it is learnt that the leak is attributed to starting the work without taking any precaution on water proofing measures. With the rains being forecast, the basement is expected to be flooded which can later pose safety threat to the structure.
Factfile:
1. The project was announced in the assembly in 2011.
2. The project was shelved as feasibility report said that the project on eight acres of land is not feasible as there would be lot of movement of truck which could result in congestion.
4. The bus terminus project was revived on 2016 and a feasibility report was prepared again.
5. Planning permission for the project sought by CMDA on November 2016.
6. The project was awarded to BNR Infrastructure at a cost of Rs 94 crore
7. There will be 50 parking lots for buses as well as 40 idle parking lots.
