Tamil Nadu government is creating a master complex in Todhunter Nagar near Saidapet by building 1,800 flats for government servants after demolishing the existing 464 flats under Tamil Nadu Government Rental Housing Scheme (TNGRHS) Quarters.
The proposed master complex, which will host housing and other amenities for government servants, is being worked out and will be implemented once the land from Public Works Department and technical education land is acquired, official sources said.
The move by government comes in the wake of move to dismantle 464 dilapidated TNGRHS flats.
Sources indicated that action has been taken to dismantle 464 flats and notices have been issued to allottees to vacate and alternate accommodation are provided at similar scheme in Thirumangalam.
It is learnt that proposal has been floated to build stilt plus 19 floor building which could house 1800 flats by acquiring Public Works Department land which is adjacent to TNGRHS site.
It is leant that the state housing board will be acquiring 4,750 square meters of land belonging to PWD and will be compensating it 5,239 square metres area with transfer of 48 TNGRHS flats area.
Sources said that a 18 metre road, near the 464 flats that is going to be demolished, is also being proposed by Public Works Department. Similarly, land is being acquired to rebuild a church and mosque which will be demolished.
TNHB sources told Express that a playground belonging to technical education department will also be acquired for the project.
“The playground is likely to be shifted to Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board area at Perumbakam as the beneficiaries of the institutions have over the year moved to Perumbakam and Thoraipakkam,” an official source said.
It is learnt that a meeting was held recently with top officials of three departments to work out a plan to transfer land from Public works Department to Tamil Nadu housing Board, transfer of technical education land to TNHB and shifting of play ground area of technical education to Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board.
Earlier, the state government has already issued a GO to demolish 174TNGRHS flats and construct 504 TNGRHS flats. All necessary financial sanction has been approved by TNHB and tenders are under scrutiny.
It is learnt that TNHB has till now constructed 25,849 residential rental units under Tamil Nadu Government Rental Housing Scheme. Tamil Nadu Housing Board is planning to raise funds worth Rs 682 crore with the sale of 1779 residential flats under the Self Financing Scheme. The flats will be constructed after demolishing 2,238 flats located in 17 places of Chennai.
