Chennai:
In a bid to boost India’s medal tally in the Olympics,
Sports ministry has launched a 10-year plan to nurture hidden talent in rural
areas.
Speaking after commissioning of inshore patrol vessel
(IPV) ICGS Rajkamal here on Tuesday, Union Minister of State (MoS) Defence and
Independent Charge of Youth Affairs and Sport Jitender Singh said as per the
plan, talent will be identified in rural areas and then sent to district for
training. “If they excel there then they would be taken to Sport Authority of
India’s centre for excellence where they would be nurtured,” he added.
The minister also said that the Centre is developing 28
centres of excellence where world class coaching would be provided under the
scheme.
The minister said that the centres of sports excellence are
being upgraded and over four or five have fully been equipped. “We are also
planning to bring in foreign coaches besides focusing on specific disciplines
where we have chances to win medals,” the minister said.
The minister also said that Tamil Nadu will be getting
the surveillance radar system very soon, which is a giant leap forward to
coastal security.
To a query on the continous attacks on fishermen from Tamil
Nadu by Sri Lankan Navy, the minister said the issue is being bilaterally dealt
by ministry of external affairs. “Currently, senior officers of Coast Guard, police and diplomatic
channels meet every six months to discuss the situation. I have also requested
to be part of the meeting which will be conducted soon,” the minister said.
He also said
that the government has launched a pilot project by fitting GPS equipment on
fishing boats so that their boats can be tracked.
