Indian Railways plans to introduce LARGESS scheme

Indian Railways is planning to introduce Liberalised Active Retirement Scheme for Guaranteed Employment for Safety Staff scheme (LARGESS) whereby a ward of the railway employee, who seeks voluntary retirement at the age of 50, can be employed in the railways.

Addressing a jam-packed Perambur railway stadium to mark the inauguration of the 87th convention of All India Railway Federation, Union Railyway Minister Dinesh Trivedi said that he will have consultations with the railway board officials before implementing the scheme. 

The modified version of LARGESS scheme reportedly had some conditions which did not favour many railway employees and Trivedi said he will work on it so that it can benefit them. “Once I return to Delhi I will talk to the chairman of the Railway Board on the LARGESS scheme,” he assured the workers.

The minister said the railway board is also planning to make Duranto accessible to workers by providing them duty passes on the lines of Rajdhani Express.

He also hailed the workers for non-politicising railways. “In politics ministers may come and go but you must stay like this,” he said. He also defended the bonus of 78 days for workers. “Some claimed it is too much. But I defended it,” said the minister.

Meanwhile, N Kanniah, general secretary of Southern Railway Mazdoor Union stressed the need for implementing the recommendation of trackman committee report to improve the status of the trackman besides allowing women representatives in the negotiating foras at zonal and divisional level.

He also called for the cadre restructuring to fill in two lakh vacancies in the railways. Minister of state for railways K H Muniappa, David Cockroft, general secretary of International transport workers’ federation also spoke on the occasion. Russian Transport Workers Federation leaders and Nepal Transport Workers’ Federation leaders were also present on the occasion.
