Indian govt nurturing students on ways to cope with crisis

Schools in Chennai will be among the 100 schools selected across the country to educate youngsters on how to cope up with disasters and understand their role during the time of crisis.

G S Saini, director of Nagpur-based National Civil Defence College told Express that the pilot project, which will be implemented from next academic year, will have two schools from major cities and Chennai will also be part of the project.

As part of the 1.5 crore pilot project planned by Ministry of Home Affairs, the schools will have National Civil Defence Corps which will be different from the existing National Cadet Corps.

National Civil Defence Corps (NCDC) will nurture the youngsters on how to be prepared to face the disasters, he said adding that, “We want the child to understand his responsibility in the event of a impending disaster because land of protection is less in schools.”  

Interestingly, the schools are handpicked by the National Civil Defence College and the director said that till now they have not zeroed in on any schools at present.

The project will facilitate a trainer from each school to undergo training at National Civil Defence College in Nagpur before imparting to training to the school students.
