Indian Navy demonstrates prowess of its elite warships




Chennai:
Six warships belonging to the Eastern Fleet of the Indian Navy on Wednesday carried out naval training exercises at the coast of Chennai for the public as part of Navy Day celebrations.

The warships includes INS Shivalik, a multi-role frigate, three R-class guided missile destroyers that include INS Ranjit, INS Ranvir and INS Ranvijay and INS INS Airawat, the third Shardul class amphibious warfare vessel of the Indian Navy, and INS Kirch, a Kora Class corvette, currently in active service with the Indian Navy.

With Tamil Nadu Governor K Rosiah on board INS Shivalik, the ships traveled 30 kms in two hours 30 minutes conducting various naval exercises and keeping the audence of about 3,000 people spellbound.

The exercises include Naval ships carry out activities like firing of signal cartridges and a helicopter carrying out search and rescue operations that involved staged demonstations of a man being rescued from the ocean.

INS Shivalik demonstrated anti-air machine gun firing, which involved taking down lit up flare-like targets that were shot into the sky for the purpose. Light and Medium Range machine guns were used for the exercise.

The ships also demonstrated underway replenishment involving transfer of men and material by jackstay.

Rear Admiral HCS Bisht, Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet, Indian Navy, under whose supervision the event was held said the exercises are being held as extension of navy day celebrations. He said on Tuesday more than 10,000 people visited the warships.
