Flower trade blooms on Pongal eve

Chennai:
The flower trade was brisk and the stocks were sold out due to limited availability of stock, according to flower traders.

The not so busy flower market was crowded with people haggling for prices with the traders as the prices of flowers like lilly, marigold, jasmine rise nearly five fold due to the demand for flowers.

Koyambedu Wholesale Flower Market Association Secretary Mookiah.says the availability of flowers on Friday was only two tonnes as against the usual availability of four tonnes.

He said many traders are just hoarding the stock which they will release it tomorrow. “However, this will not affect the prices as the flowers will continue to sell at the same rate,” Mookiah said.

He said the demand for flowers was high as Friday being an auspicious day, Hindus offer flowers to the deities. He said most of the flowers were earlier sold for Rs 20 to rs 25 per kg.

Now marigold was being sold for Rs 80-Rs 100 per kg while Lily was sold at Rs 60 to Rs 75 per kg. Similarly, Kanagavaram is being sold at Rs 250-Rs 400 per kg while Madurai Jasmine is being sold at Rs 750 to Rs 900 per kg.

“Till now we were selling the flowers for Rs 20 per kg now this is a Pongal bonanza for us,” said a trader.
