Chennai:
The report on safety audit of cranes
following the accident near Pachayappa’s College that resulted in the death of
a migrant labourer and injuries to six others will be submitted to metro rail
managing director K Rajaman on Monday, according to a Chennai Metro Rail
spokesman.
The safety checks of crane has been
ordered after the crane boom that was holding 25 tonne of steel rods snapped
and fell dragging a worker in the process into the diaphgram pit (for building
underground metro station) and injuring six others.
The spokesman told Express that
crane works have begun on all the sites except the one near Pachaiyappas
College on the busy Poonamalle High Road where the accident occurred on
Wednesday night.
On Friday, the work had begun only on few sites after some of
them underwent safety checks.
The spokesman also said that
measures have begun to provide the deceased worker with compensation as per the
Workman’s Compensation Act. It will be provided by L&T. “This will take
nearly a month as state government and West Bengal government are involved in
the process,” he added.
Meanwhile, of the six injured
workers who are undergoing treatment in Apollo Hospital, the condition of two
is still said to be critical, said the metro rail spokesman.
