Chennai:
Thirteen
Indian fishermen detained by Sri Lankan Navy on early Monday morning were
released on Tuesday after being interrogated, according to a senior coast guard
official.
On the sidelines of Welcome Ceremony of Indian Coast Guard
Ship Samudra Paheredar, Commander of Coastguard region (East) Inspector General
S P Sharma said that the 13 fishermen were detained by Sri Lankan Navy on
Monday morning around 2am and were interrogated and later released this morning
along with three boats.
“I only have this much information from the Mandapam
station. This release of the fishermen was conveyed just before the ceremony,”
he said when pressed for further information on the incident.
Interestingly, the Indian fishermen are released a day
after Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa expressed her resentment over
the Centre’s soft-handling of continuous attacks on Tamil Nadu fishermen by the
Sri Lankan Navy.
