Moorthingar Street slum to get a new look as construction of tenements using pre-fab tech to start on Feb

Chennai:

The slum in Moorthingar Street in Vyasarpadi is likely to get a new
look as the construction of 940 tenements using pre-fab technology is
likely to commence by February next year, according to Slum Clearance
Board sources.

The tenements, which are being constructed at a cost of Rs 70 crore,
will be built using building components including columns, beams and
roofs made by the contractor elsewhere. This will be brought to the
construction site and installed to make the buildings.

Interestingly, slum clearance board has evicted the slum dwellers to
temporary shelters
before handing over the site to B G Shirke construction Technologies
to construct  940 tenements
using pre-fab technology.

This also comes in the wake of Tamil Nadu Housing Board’s plan  to
construct 1,500 multi-storied
residential flats in Shollinganallur by adopting pre-fab technology
yet to take off due to lack of applications.

The Rs 612 crore proposed project to come up in an extent of 14.41
acres in Sholinganallur is awaiting 1,000 registered applications with
initial deposit before work could be progressed.  The scheme which was
initially to be implemented under the self-financing scheme is likely
to be  taken up under hire
purchase scheme and demand assessment is under progress
