SPCA rescues monkeys; Plans to invest Rs 40 lakh for providing amenties for seized animals

Two six-month old monkeys were rescued by the Society For PreventionAgainst Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) near Chepauk station here followinga complaint of cruelty being meted out to the animals.
T Thiyagarajan, honorary secretary of Madras Society for thePrevention of Cruelty to Animals and D Shegar, executive committeemember of Madras SPCA told Express that the animals were rescued byinspectors Chandrasekharan and Rajendran after a resident fromAndamans and Nicobar Island alerted the officials.
The Indian born monkeys that were rescued would soon be transferred toVandalur Zoo after being kept under observation, Thiyagarajan said.
Interestingly, Monkey is among the list of five animals that have beenbanned from performing in the street or anywhere else.
It is learnt that SPCA has seized around 400 animals, who weresubjected to cruelty, last year and most of them, including rareexotic birds and animals, were later released in Guindy and VandalurZoo.
There are few animals like an injured Pomnerian dog as well as aneagle who lost both his limbs that is still being nurtured byofficials there.
“We also have beautiful kittens. We invite those who want to adoptthem to come to our office and pick them up,” says Thiagarajan.
Meanwhile, SPCA is also working to provide larger cages for the birdsthat have been rescued. “We plan to have larger cages of 22 feetdiameter so that the birds feel themselves at home. This would cost Rs7 to ts 9 lakh,” said Shegar.
Interestingly, SPCA has already bought 5.3 acres of land atThirupalaivanam village in Ponneri taluk in Thiruvallur district forproviding better amenities for rescued animals. “This year we will bespending Rs 40 lakh for providing shelter for small and big animalsbesides animal dispensaries,” said Thiagarajan.
“We are also conducting a campaign along with Chennai corporation onJanuary 15 where 50,000 handouts would be given to educate people onhow to care for animals,” said Shegar.
