DVAC arrests commercial tax official for demanding Rs 1.5 lakh bribe



Chennai:

The directorate of vigilance and anti-corruption has arrested a former
commercial tax officer in-charge of Export Refund claims unit for
demanding a bribe of Rs 1.5 lakh from a leather exporter.



T Ganesh, a leather exporter from Nerkundram in Chennai, was due for
Input Tax Credit of Rs 60 lakh, a refund eligible for exporters.



He made the claim with Rajaram, commercial tax officer, Export Refund
Claims, Pammal, for the refund.



Rajaram processed the files but delayed the release of refund order.
Despite getting promoted as assistant commissioner and posted to
Velachery circle, Rajaram did not hand over the refund files to the
concerned officer and kept them under his custody in his old office at
Pammal.



He later demanded a bribe of Rs 1.5 lakh from Ganesh to release the
refund order. It is learnt that he had insisted that he would not
release the refund order without the bribe amount. Rajaram had
directed Ganesh to come to the commercial Taxes Office in Pammal on
Thursday to pay the bribe amount and get the refund.



Ganesh filed a complaint with DVAC and a team lead by S M Mohammed
Iqbal, additional superintendent of police arrested Rajaram while
accepting a bribe of Rs 1.5 lakh from Ganesh. He was remanded to
judicial custody by chief judicial magistrate Chengalpet
