Killing of 20 TN men was to shield top red sanders smuggler, alleges Union Minister

Chennai:

The killing of 20 Tamil Nadu men by Andhra Pradesh task force
personnel is alleged to be done to safeguard a top red sanders
smuggler, according to Union Minister of State for Road Transport,
Highways and Shipping Pon Radhakrishnan said

Speaking to reporters after inaugurating a two-day national seminar
organised by Indian Maritime University here on Wednesday, the
minister said that the 20 persons who were gunned down could be
arrested and even if the police failed to catch them they could have
ensured that they are not killed.

“This raises the question over the killing. Was it done to hide
someone who would have got exposed. The killing needs to be
investigated,” said the minister.

However, the minister cautioned against politicising the issue on the
basis of language and urged restraint. “The act is condemnable and
pressure should be put on the Andhra government to find out on why the
police personnel killed the alleged red sanders smugglers and wood
cutters rather than arresting them,” the minister said.

Radhakrishnan also urged the state government to give support for the
inland waterways project to revive the old Buckingham canal from Yanam
to Chennai.

“We have got the support of Andhra government to revive the project.
Tamil Nadu government should give its support too,” the Union minister
said.

The central government wants to modernise the canal system and the
Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) is preparing a detailed
project report for revival of the 1,100 km-long canal system that runs
through Yanam-Kakinada, Rajahmundry, Eluru, Vijayawada, Tenali,
Nellore and Chennai.
Earlier, Indian Maritime University vice chancellor K Ashok Vardhan
assured the minister that the institute which was plagued by
controversies would emerge as a Centre for Excellence in the next five
years. Radhakrishnan said that he wanted IMU to emerge as Centre of
Excellence in the next couple of years. Also present were Chennai Port
Trust chairman Atulya Mishra and other officials.
