Chennai:
Bearing the brunt of scorching sun, the city has something to cheer
about during the Tamil New Year as the dwindling reservoir in Poondi
would be gurgling again with Krishna Water.
Andhra Pradesh has opened the gates of Kandaleru to supply remaining
1.66 TMC feet of water to Tamil Nadu on Friday and a Water Resources
Department official has said that the water would be reaching Poondi
on April 14, the day when Tamil New Year is being marked.
“It would be a New Year gift from Andhra Pradesh and the release of
water is timely when the water levels in the reservoirs are
dwindling,” the official told Express.
He said Andhra released 500 cusecs of water at 10.10 am, which was
increased to 1,000 cusecs by noon. WRD officials said it will be
increased to 1,600 cusecs by the end of the day.
The release of water by Andhra comes after Chief Minister O
Paneerselvam held parleys with officials while reviewing the water
situation in Chennai. Top government officials also visited Andhra
Pradesh and met the irrigation secretary of Andhra Pradesh to apprise
him of the water situation in the city.
The water from Krishna would be enough to rescue the city from the
summer, the official said.
Interestingly, Chennai Metro water and Water Resources department is
also looking at other avenues to boost the reservoir levels. The dead
storage in Cholavaram is being sucked out and pumped into Red Hills
reservoir. “We have pumped 60 million cubic feet of water from
Cholavaram. Now it has only 50mcft water left which we are still
pumping to the reservoir,” a WRD official said.
Interestingly water is also being taken out from Poondi and stored in
Red Hills. This is to ensure precious water is not lost out due to
evaporation, the WRD official said.
