TN planning to introduce vocational skills as part of school curriculum

Tamil Nadu government is planning to introduce vocational skills as part of school curriculum for 9th and 10th standard children in 25 schools in the state possibly by next academic year.

A school department source told Express the classes would have 40 periods of vocational skills.

This is being introduced as a pilot project and two blocks have been identified in this regard, said the source.

The project is part of Ministry of Human Resource Development initiative to spread vocational education across India. It is being implemented by Pandit Sunderlal Sharma Central Institute of Vocational Education in Bhopal along with the support UNICEF. and Labour department.

MHRD has already identified 63 areas where in vocational skills curriculum would be identified in schools. In the first phase it was implemented in states like Haryana, Rajasthan and Gujarat, said the source.

Sources said a clearer picture on the curriculum to be taught in the state schools would emerge after a three-day consultative meeting will be held with the Central Institute of Vocational Education along with Regional engineering college Trichy and the school department officials from January 28.

“We already have a bird’s eye view of the project,” said the source while refusing to divulge any further information.

Interestingly, the project is awaiting the approval of the state government for the project.

Sources said that the project is likely to be scaled up once it is successful.
