IIT awaiting TN nod to set up Centre for Excellence

Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, is awaiting state government’s nod to set up Centre for Urbanisation, Buildings and the Environment (CUBE) which is likely to be modelled on the lines on General Services Administration of United States, according to IIT Madras director Bhaskar Ramamurthi.

Ramammurthi told Express that IIT had discussion with Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority and Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board and are awaiting the minutes of meeting before going ahead with the project.

The Centre for Urbanisation, Buildings and the Environment (CUBE) will initially require seed funding which would be provided by the state government and possibly by the Ministry of Housing and Poverty Alleviation.

The focus of CUBE will be on applied research for innovative technology and policy based solutions in partnership with the government, academia, private sector and other stakeholders. “It will be a resource centre which will provide support to the state. We could also provide Internet of Things solutions for Smart cities,” said Ramamurthi.

“The focus would be on developing smart cities, urban planning and transport and environment stability,” he said , adding that the centre will also help state pollution control board in reducing pollution in the city.

Meanwhile IIT will also be helping digitise the land records and planning permission for Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority, according to Ramamurthi.  

Ramamurthi has said that his institution is providing software solution to CMDA as it has asked IIT to take up system integration study and development of software for online single window clearance for plans and planning permission approval. “We are also helping in digitising the land records,” he said.
