Bid to smuggle gold worth Rs 1.25 cr foiled

A bid to smuggle gold worth Rs 1.25 crore by seven passengers, including a woman, travelling from Kuala Lumpur to Tiruchy via Chennai Airport in Air India flight was foiled by sleuths belonging to Directorate of Revenue Intelligence on Thursday.

Working on a tip off that a modus operandi of international passengers travelling in the combo flight are handing over gold to domestic passengers, the officials identified the group of passengers travelling from Kuala Lumpur and recovered 3.986 kg of undeclared foreign origin gold smuggled by them. All seven have been arrested in Trichy airport.

DRI sources said that initially a total of 3.186 kg of gold was seized from the passengers. A further 800 grams was recovered from the aircraft as it was believed that passengers would have dropped sensing trouble following the raid by DRI. 

Currency seized: DRI officials also seized foreign currency in excess of permitted quantity from two passengers who were bound for Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur in teh same flights. DRI sources said the passengers were carrying foreign currency worth Rs 16.28 lakh. Further investigation is on.
