CHENNAI:
Australia’s High Commissioner to India, Barry O'Farrell, who had played a key role in strengthening economic ties between Australia and India, will visit Chennai from June 8 and June 9.
The High Commissioner, who is going to conclude his successful three-and-a-half-year term in office, has helped Australia elevate its relationship with India to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, concluded a free trade agreement, and announced the opening of an additional consulate in
Bengaluru.
“Australia-India ties are at a historic high, cemented by the recent visits of our Prime Ministers. We see lots of potential to do more with Tamil Nadu in the fields of technology, education, advanced manufacturing, clean energy, and digital health. On the strategic front we also have shared interests in maritime security in the Indo-Pacific region. With our Consulate opening soon in Bengaluru the existing team in Chennai will be able to devote more energy to advancing our relationship with Tamil Nadu” said the High Commissioner.
As part of his visit the High Commissioner will meet with members of the Tamil Nadu Government, including Ministers, as well as the Governor N Ravi. The Indo-Australian Chamber of Commerce (IACC) has its national headquarters in Chennai and will host a function for the High Commissioner at which business people will exchange views on how best to operationalise the Australia-India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA) and seize opportunities for two-way trade and investment.
“With the entry of ECTA, and the complementary nature of our economic relationship we expect to see trade with Tamil Nadu grow. Australia is a reliable supplier of the inputs Tamil Nadu needs for its industries, from skills training to critical minerals” added the High Commissioner.
