Chennai:
Radios are out of fashion in Tamil Nadu and the state has
highest penetration of television sets, according to Houselisting and Housing Census 2011.
The
survey states that the state is next to New Delhi when compared to the
penetration of television sets. Interestingly, 87 per cent of households in the
state have television sets when compared to the national average of 47.2 per
cent.
Surprisingly,
there has been a 46 per cent rise when compared with the figures released in
census 2001. In rural areas there has been a growth of 61 per cent during the
last decade while in urban areas there has been a rise of 28 per cent in
ownership of television sets, the survey added.
Interestingly,
radio or transistor is going to be out of fashion in Tamil Nadu with only 23
per cent still preferring the audio medium. There has been a decline of 21 per
cent but the figures should be taken into account keeping in mind that the
census officials haven’t taken mobile phone radio into account, census
officials said.
Interestingly,
the computers, laptop and Internet hasn’t penetrated deeper in Tamil Nadu with
only 11 per cent households have computer or laptop facility while four per
cent have Internet facility. The census reveals the penetration of internet is
eight per cent in urban areas as compared to one per cent in rural area.
Meanwhile,
the census also revealed that 75 per cent households have telephone or mobile
facility with 84 per cent in urban and 66 per cent in rural area. The
penetration of mobile phone is n69 per cent and landline is 13 per cent.
