Chennai Corporation sets target of collecting 10 tonnes of plastic to build roads

Chennai Corporation has set a target of collecting 10 tonnes of thin plastic from each zone every week to realize its dream of relaying the city roads with plastic content.

Delivering a special address during a session organized by Confederation of Indian Industry on ‘Role of Young Indians in the Next Decade – Chennai Perspective’, Davidar said currently corporation is getting plastic from Sivakasi and New Delhi.

Seeking brilliant ideas from youngsters, he said the corporation needs a machine which can wash plastics and dry it besides shredding machines which can process 800 tonnes of plastic.

He also said corporation is working on a street design that will provide safety, mobility, pedestrian accessibility besides putting to use creatively the available space. “We are currently working on designing a proper street and is working it out with stakeholders,” he added.

In a bid to solve the stagnation of water in the road, he said the corporation is planning 5,000 storm water inlets in next three months so that the city is ready for the monsoon.

He said the corporation is planning to simply the road cut and town planning permission by working with electricity board and  Metro Water and computerizing the whole process. “We are working on a process where one can apply online for permisiion,” he added.

Earlier, former Supreme Court judge and Lokayukta of Karnataka Santosh Hegde hit out at the rampant corruption and urged youngsters not to be mere spectators but launch a protest like Anna Hazare.

He alleged that the system has failed with the collusion of politician and bureaurats, who encourage corruption. He also slammed the politicians who questioned Anna Hazare’s anti-corruption movement stating that it is the movement of people. He also hit out at Income Tax department which failed to question the wealth of politicians, including Mayawati, who rose from the level of a school teacher.

Actor Vivek highlighted the need for nature to be nurtured and stressed on the need for planting trees.
