3 lighthouses to be turned into tourist destinations



Chennai:
The project report to turn 13 lighthouses, including four from Tamil Nadu, into tourist destinations is ready, according to Union Shipping Minister G K Vasan.

Speaking after inaugurating National Automatic Identification system of Directorate General, Lighthouse and Lightships (DGLL) here on Friday, Vasan said plans are also to turn Marina lighthouse into a museum.

In Tamil Nadu, Muttam Point Lighthouse near Kanyakumari, Rameswaram Lighthouse, Mahabalipuram Lighthouse (Mamallapuram – south of Chennai) and    Madras Lighthouse will be turned into tourist destinations.

He also said that DGLL is in the process of establishing a Navtex chain which will facilitate in broadcasting weather and safety related information which will be of vital importance to mariners especially during natural disturbances.
