Chennai Airport prepares for radiation leaks

Chennai Airport was exposed for the first time to Radiological emergency exercise conducted by National Disaster Management Authority following the directives of Union Ministry of Home Affairs.



Airport Authority of India spokesperson said that it is for the first time such an exercise was conducted in Chennai Airport.



The exercise scenario underlined the preparation in the event of damage of an import cargo consignment carrying high strength radioactive materials.



Cargo handlers, airport fire service, Central Industrial security Force and police were trained to handle the situation while informing the Chemical Biological Radiology Nuclear (CBRN) team and Department of atomic Energy’s Emergency Response Centre in Kalpakkam.



Other stakeholders which include state authorities and Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services took part in the event.



The exercise included evacuation of casualities to designated hospital (Sri ramachandra Medical college) which is an equipped and authorised handling for handling patients in case of radiological emergencies. Police also created a dedicated green corridor for shifting of casualty to the hospital during the exercise.



Preparation for the exercise was started almost three months in advance by conducting a week-long training programme on CBRN Emergency Management for the Airport Emergency handlers in september 2017 by NDMA in coordination with Airport Authority of India.
