Chennai GPO reaching out to transgender community

Chennai:
In a bid to reach out to transgender community, Chennai General Post office (GPO) is launching a campaign ‘Ardhanareeshwara’ where in 5,000 members of the transgender community will be targeted, according to Alok Ojha, Chief Postmaster, Chennai GPO.

Ojha said the campaign will be launched from next Saturday and he hopes that the transgender community whose contribution to Indian culture has been significant will be provided with various schemes being offered to the community by the Union government.

While Ojha has plans to launch a special cover on Saturday when the leaders of transgender community arrive from Mumbai, he says a clearer picture will emerge only after the meeting with the members of the community.

“We intend to provide them with training about how to write mails, file Right to Information petitions and even help them open a postal savings account which is Aadhar linked, mobiled linked and ATM enabled,” he said.

This would ensure that they get funds under the Direct benefit Transfer accounts seeded by Aadhaar,” said Ojha. He said that on Wednesday he held discussions with members of the community on issues of social security, banking, delivery of mails and their investment on small saving schemes.
