Chennai:
Tamil Nadu ranks third among the five states having highest proportion of urban population and second when it comes to sex ratio as per the Primary Census Abstract 2011.
According to the data released, Goa tops the list having the highest proportion of urban population (62.2 pc) followed by Mizoram (52.1pc), Tamil Nadu (48.4 pc), Kerala (47.7 pc) and Maharashtra (45.2pc).
Interestingly, Tamil Nadu is also way ahead of other states and ranks next to Kerala when it comes to the sex ratio. As per the census, the state has 996 females per 1,000 males. Interestingly, Kerala has 1,084 females per 1,000 males.
Other southern state to figure in top five is Andhra Pradesh which has a sex ratio of 993 females per 1,000 males.
Interestingly, the girl child is still looked down upon by the society when the census takes into account the data available in the age group of 0-6 to highlight the changes in our society in its outlook towards the girl child.
Surprisingly, neither Tamil Nadu nor Andhra Pradesh doesn’t figure in the list of top five states as per the child sex ratio. Even Kerala, which boasts of a healthy sex ratio ranks next to Chhatisgarh, which has 969 females per 1,000 population. Kerala has 964 females per 1,000 males. Assam, West Bengal and Jharkhand and Karnataka also figure in the list. Interestingly, this figure is the indicator of the future trends of sex ratio in the population. The most worrying figures are in northern states and Haryana is placed bottom having only 879 females per 1,000 males.
