Dr U Kamachi Mudali, Outstanding Scientist and Group
Director at Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research, Kalpakkam is now the
Chief Executive of Heavy Water Board (HWB), one of the industry units of
Department of Atomic Energy at Mumbai.
HWB has seven plants in the country at Kota, Thal,
Talcher, Hazira, Baroda, Manuguru and Tuticorin for producing heavy water
required for pressurised heavy water reactors (PHWRs) operating in India, and
also involved in developing many other useful materials of relevance to DAE and
society (Boron, Sodium, Oxygen-18, Potassium, Organic Solvents, etc.).
Dr Kamachi, who received many prestigious awards
including Tamil Nadu Scientist Award, Meritorious Award in Corrosion Excellence
from NACE India, hails from Brammadesam, near Anthiyur, Erode and had his early
education at Government High School, Anthiyur in Erode and Applied Science
degrees at Coimbatore Institute of Technology and PSG College of Technology
