Krishna trickles into Poondi reservoir; Water supply to be restored after building up storage level

Nemelli desalination plant under maintenance for 36 hours
Chennai:
Krishna Water, which was discharged from the Kandaleru reservoir in Andhra Pradesh last week, trickled down to the Poondi reservoir on Monday as Water Resources Department and Metro Water plan strategies to build up the storage level in the reservoir.
“The water, which was expected to reach Poondi reservoir on Sunday evening after it touched Zero Point on Saturday, trickled into the reservoir at around 3.45 pm on Monday. The delay was due to presence of siphons, that are used to convey water across a natural depression under a road or under a canal, in Alikudi odai and Rajan Odai,” said chief engineer of water resources department R Emaraj.
“Currently, we have got five cusecs of water and the flow is expected to improve in the coming days,” said Emaraj.
Although, the city is under a wet spell, the water levels in the reservoirs have yet to improve. The arrival of Krishna water may have eased the worries of Metro water officials but they are keeping their fingers crossed on when the normal supply will resume.
“As of now, we are building the storage level in the reservoir. Once the water stabilizes then we will resume the supply,” a Metro Water source said but refused to provide any timeline.
Currently, the city has about 1.4 tmc feet of water of which .8tmc feet is dead storage. As such the city only has less than .6 tmc feet of water to cater to Chennai’s thirst before the arrival of north-east monsoon.
Meanwhile, Metro Water is set to take up maintenance works in the Nemelli desalination plant. “The plant has been working non-stop for months. We will be taking up maintenance works during the next 36 hours,” the Metro Water source said.
Metro Water sources also said that it will be getting additional 50 mld of water from Neyveli by the middle of the month. “The work got delayed due to strike in Neyveli Lignite Corporation. We expect the water by July 15,” a Metro Water source added.
